DIY Ideas for Creative and Stylish Window Treatments

Decor accessories like window dressings can help set the tone of a room. Choose from a range of window treatments like curtains, valances, draperies, cornices and Roman shades. Here are some stylish and creative window dressings you can easily create yourself.
Window within a Window
A versatile accessory that will suit any decorating style, create window treatments like curtain panels with sheer blocks to allow some light into the room without compromising on essential factors like the privacy of full-length curtain panels. Use these curtain panels layered with flat Roman shades when you want privacy or wish to block out the sunlight.
To design these curtains, choose solid-colored window panels and lay them flat. Place a poster board measuring 15 x 25 inches in the center or towards the lower end of the panel and trace the outline. Remove the board and cut out the block. Lay sheer fabric over the hole and pin into place. Cut the sheer fabric to size. Lay the panel flat on an ironing board and secure into place using iron-on adhesive. Embellish the front cuts with grosgrain ribbon in a contrasting color. Iron on the front and back on medium heat to help the adhesive adhere to the fabric well.
Dazzling Diamond Drapes
Create these diamond masterpieces to add geometric definition to your living room. For these diamond-patterned drapes, measure the height of the drapes to determine the size of the diamond you need to line the panel with. Make a template using card stock and trace around it on the back of a fabric contrasting your drapes. Paint the back of the cutout with fray glue and let dry. Cut out and repeat the process till you have enough diamonds to fill a row lining the edge of the panel. Iron the panel on medium heat to secure the cutouts to the panel in a vertical line with the iron-on adhesive. Use the same method to embellish a matching pair of Roman shades with the stripe of diamonds running horizontally.
Stenciled Roman Shades
For this easy-to-do idea, you will need bamboo shades, a stencil of your choice, acrylic paints and suitable paint brushes. Create the stencil pattern on the bamboo shades by placing the stencil on the shades and painting over it with a flat paintbrush. Use some acrylic sealer to seal in the color after the paint is dry. Decorate the panels with some velvet trim to layer different textures.
Create a new look for your home using these simple ideas to make unique window treatments.
