If you are a fiberglass boat owner, finding a hole in the bottom of your boot can be a disturbing experience. Obviously, you are going to want to fix it. But how are you going to do that? This article will show you how you can repair the hole in your fiberglass boat.
First, you want to start by gathering all the necessary equipment. You are going to need an orbit sander, scissors, coping saw as well as a scraper, tape measure and cleaning supplies. In order to fix it properly, you will want to have a fiberglass mat, Bondo putty and sandpaper. If you are a glass boat owner already, you probably have fiberglass gel coding, supports as well as cleaning agents. These will also have to be used in order to complete this project.
Before you fix the hole, you will want to remove any object that is near the hole. Make sure that there is nothing that could ever get in your way. Next you will want to cut out any damaged portion of the fiberglass floor. Obviously, you no longer desire to have any portion of your fiberglass boat that has any holes. Remove the damaged portions.
The next step is to apply epoxy. Before you do this, make sure that you clean and dry the floor. Any debris that is in the way could cause a faulty fix. When cleaning the floor, make sure that you avoid any strong cleaning compounds as they may negatively affect the adhesives.
If the portion you are trying to fix is curved, you will want to make sure that you have the proper supports in place. Supports will help you to reach the appropriate section of the book.
In order to get the adhesives to work properly, rough up the surfaces where the adhesives will be placed. This is best done by using a steel brush and some elbow grease. If you fail to rough up the edges, you will probably experience a less-than-perfect quality of a fix. The roughing up allows for more surface area for the adhesives to stick.
If you’re fixing a curved section of the boat, you’ll want your fiberglass piece to mimic the curved area. Then, you will want to overlay it with the Bondo putty. Next, you will want to put the fiberglass over the Bondo and add epoxy. After you’ve completed that, sandpaper the rough edges in order to create a smooth finish.
Are you tired yet? Don’t give up! We’re almost finished. After repairing the underside of the boat, clean the exposed side. Just like before, you will want to cut out plenty of fiberglass and cover it with epoxy. For a better look, a smoothing out the bubbles or wrinkles that are in the area will create a more polished finish.
After all these repairs are completed, it is best to go back and finish the sanding. Try to spot any rough edges in order to make a clean, professional look. Completing this will give you a good looking floor as well as preparing the floor for a quality paint job. Adding paint will make sure there are no signs of repair and will give your boat the quality look it deserves.
